Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (for batter)
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for batter)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil or melted unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 medium apple, peeled, cored, and finely diced (e.g., Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp)
  • For the Cinnamon Sugar Swirl:
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan, or line with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, ½ cup granulated sugar, baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon until well combined.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, vegetable oil (or melted butter), and vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
  5. Gently fold in the finely diced apple pieces.
  6. Pour about half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  7. In a small bowl, combine the 2 tablespoons granulated sugar and ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon for the swirl. Sprinkle half of this cinnamon sugar mixture over the batter in the pan.
  8. Carefully spoon the remaining batter over the cinnamon sugar layer. Sprinkle the remaining cinnamon sugar mixture over the top of the batter.
  9. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until a wooden skewer or toothpick inserted into the center of the bread comes out clean.
  10. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing and serving.
