Ingredients

  • 1 pound (450g) pasta (such as penne, fettuccine, or spaghetti)
  • 8 ounces (225g) beef bacon, diced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (if needed)
  • 1 pound (450g) lean ground beef
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for garnish
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving 1/2 cup of pasta water.
  2. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, cook the diced beef bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside on a paper towel-lined plate. Leave 1-2 tablespoons of bacon fat in the skillet. If there isn’t enough fat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat and set the beef aside.
  4. Add the chopped onion to the same skillet and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Stir in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  6. Reduce heat to low, then stir in the heavy cream and 1/4 cup of the Parmesan cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Add the cooked ground beef and cooked pasta to the sauce. Toss to combine. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water until desired consistency is reached.
  8. Stir in most of the crispy beef bacon, reserving a little for garnish.
  9. Serve immediately, garnished with the remaining crispy beef bacon, fresh parsley, and extra Parmesan cheese.
