Bok Choy with Oyster Sauce- Easy & Delicious Recipe
Craving a quick, flavorful, and healthy side dish that truly shines? Look no further than this incredibly easy Bok Choy with Oyster Sauce recipe! This classic Chinese preparation transforms tender-crisp bok choy into a delectable accompaniment, perfect for any meal in under 15 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (about 2-3 heads) baby bok choy
- 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon water (or chicken/vegetable broth)
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce (light or regular)
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional, for balance)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (or preferred cooking oil)
- Pinch of white pepper (optional)
Instructions
- **Prepare the Bok Choy:** Wash the bok choy thoroughly under cold running water, especially between the leaves, to remove any dirt. For baby bok choy, you can leave them whole or cut them in half lengthwise. For larger bok choy, separate the leaves and chop the white stems into 1-inch pieces, keeping the green leafy parts separate.
- **Blanch (or Steam) the Bok Choy:** Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Carefully add the bok choy to the boiling water and blanch for 1-2 minutes, or until the stems are tender-crisp and the leaves are vibrant green. Alternatively, you can steam the bok choy for 3-5 minutes. Immediately remove the bok choy and drain well. You can briefly dunk them in an ice bath to stop the cooking and preserve color, then drain again thoroughly. Arrange the cooked bok choy on a serving platter.
- **Prepare the Sauce:** In a small bowl, whisk together the oyster sauce, water (or broth), soy sauce, sugar (if using), and white pepper (if using).
- **Sauté Garlic & Finish Sauce:** Heat the vegetable oil in a small saucepan or wok over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Pour in the prepared oyster sauce mixture and bring it to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly, until it slightly thickens (about 1 minute).
- **Serve:** Drizzle the warm oyster sauce generously over the blanched bok choy on the serving platter. Serve immediately as a delicious side dish with rice or your favorite main course.
